Six Sided Solids Post Jam Update


So the GamesJobs.Live Summer Parade 2021 has come to a close.

It's been a blast and I am delighted that Six Sided Solids won some awards.

It won 'Best Original Audio' and 'Technical Accomplishment'.

It also ranked no4 in the Overall category. The highest I have every achieved at a Jam.

Whilst I was waiting for the end I spent the week updating the game to realise the original vision and to implement some improvements based on feedback.


New in v0.1.4

30 Levels. Some originals updated, Lots of new levels. 


Introduction of new level mechanics: 

Fire blocks: set your current block on fire, unless you are using a Water block which quenches the fire on contact.

Electric blocks: Pulse on and off, if you are touching them, even on your edge you become an Electric block too and the challenge becomes even greater. Unless you are using a Hard Edge block then you can balance until it's safe to settle. Hard Edge blocks also don't become Electric blocks when ended which can become useful safe havens.

Shuffle blocks: Once activated they randomly become any of the other level blocks. Mixing it up and presenting a new version of the level each time.

Lights Out: Some levels go dark and you must use the Light blocks to illuminate your route. Putting them in the right place is important as they are vulnerable to pressure.

Background artwork added to lift the darker elements and improve general visibility.


New player blocks:

Water blocks: Useful for putting out fire.

Bomb blocks: Can be used to destroy obstacles in your way. Be warned they are frisky and will explode if not handled with care.

Hard Edge blocks: Can balance on electrified blocks, but only the edge provides safety, set down and its over.

Light blocks: When the lights are out these blocks light a limited area.


Movement:

Each Six Sided Solid now has its own movement properties. Each has a start speed, acceleration and top speed.

Controls now are screen aligned and direction is unaffected by the camera rotation.


Sound:

Some SFX changed.

2 new tracks enabled and endlessly play and remix themselves forever.


GUI changes:

Some new bits of information added to easy navigation.

New functions include Z to change the camera distance for those larger levels, T to toggle tips on and off.

Q swapped with B for back/quit functions to help avoid accidental key presses.


Bugs:

An assortment of bug fixes where level loading and destruction resulted in some crossed wires.

Some blocks not functioning correctly in every situation fixed.


That's about it. Some performance issues persist in the WebGL version.

What's next: Optimisation!
